For us, performing live classical music is a community service, and to perform it well is a duty. Our job is not just to entertain, but also to inspire, amuse, and uplift the artistic standards of our community. We need people to experience our music at the source. As such, we do not wish ticket prices to be a barrier to a good music performance.
However, things do cost money. To organise this event alone costs almost RM 1,500, including rentals and other bills. That amount does not include the compensation for Aliff's performance. Thus, your donations and generosity help a lot in organising these kinds of events and make an artist's life a little easier. How much is the price of having a community of music lovers from different races and backgrounds coming together to appreciate good music? Hanya jauhari mengenal manikam. Here, we've made this list to give you an idea of what our money can get us nowadays:
RM 5 | One hour parking at KLCC |
RM 10 | Car wash for small car |
RM 15 | 1kg of Thai mangos |
RM 20 | One cup of ice blended coffee |
RM 50 | Cheap buffet meal for one person |
RM 100 | One hour rental for small music studio |
RM 500 | Average ticket price for international pop concert |
RM 1,000 | One student-grade violin from China or AirPods Pro |
RM 5,000 | One decent quality violin from China or iPhone 15 Plus |
RM 10,000 | One decent quality cello from China or MacBook Pro |
RM 50,000 | One decent quality violin from Italy or Perodua Myvi |
RM 100,000 | One year of music study in UK or Toyota Vios |
RM 1,000,000 | One Steinway Grand Piano |
Ahmad Aliff has been playing and performing music since his schoolboy days. Growing up mostly in Penang, his formative music years were spent in his school's marching band, as a violinist for a traditional dance troupe in Jabatan Kebudayaan dan Kesenian Negara Pulau Pinang, and in the Penang Symphony Orchestra. He later became a founding member of the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra.
Even before graduating with an honours degree in music performance at the top of his class, Aliff was racking up experience as a paid performer in the industry, a violin teacher, and a coach for school orchestras. He left his government job as a tutti violinist in a local broadcast orchestra to pursue his musical goals. The culmination of both his desire for knowledge and interest in conducting saw him attend a Symphonic Conducting Master Course in Moscow with Professor Vladimir Ponkin in 2017.
Prior to being married, Aliff and Rini created a brand called Cerita Muzik, starting out as music service providers but with the real goal of spreading the art, culture, and values that come from doing good music. Under Cerita Muzik, they managed to organise a total of seven orchestra and chamber concerts over three years, which were all completely independent and self-funded.
Now, the husband-and-wife team continues to be full-time musicians who wish to keep collaborating with like-minded people to promote a higher standard of living through music. At worst, their musical activities have provided a meeting place for budding couples who are now busy being young parents.
